Specifications For Revisions To The VAED For 2024-25
Updates aligned with the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED) revisions for 2024-25, including new requirements for recording patient sex at birth and gender identity.

This article addresses updates aligned with the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED) revisions for 2024-25. The changes stem from new requirements mandating separate recording of patient sex at birth and gender identity.
Changes Made
We have updated both patient and appointment screens in Medical Wizard to comply with the new specifications:
- The existing "Sex" field has been renamed to "Sex at Birth" with options including Male, Female, and other terms
- A new "Gender" field now appears alongside it, offering values such as "Man, boy, or male; Woman, girl, or female; Non-binary; Different term; Prefer not to answer; Not stated"
Both fields are now mandatory per the new specifications. For existing patients, their current information will be matched to the new values at the reporting time.
Implementation
Updates will begin rolling out in the coming weeks. Our Product Team will contact clients one day before deployment. Practices can request specific scheduling dates if needed.
We recommend informing your staff about these modifications ahead of time to ensure a smooth transition.
A detailed specification document is available through the Victorian Department of Health for reference.
